There is a moment I live for.
It happens in the middle of a drumming session at a senior living facility, when a resident who walked in quietly – maybe a little hesitantly – starts to smile. Not a polite smile. A real one. The kind that starts in the eyes. They’re holding a shaker or tapping along with a hand drum, surrounded by neighbors and friends, and something inside them opens up like a window on the first warm day of spring.
That moment is why I do what I do.
I’m Dan Hayes, founder of Dan’s Drumming and for years I’ve been bringing rhythm-based experiences to senior living communities across Wisconsin. What I’ve witnessed in those rooms has shaped everything about how I approach this work. Drumming isn’t just entertainment. For older adults, it is a doorway to connection, joy, and a renewed sense of vitality.
Rhythm Is Ageless
Here’s something I believe with my whole heart: rhythm doesn’t care how old you are. It doesn’t care about health challenges, mobility limitations, or whether someone has ever held a drumstick in their life. When I place a hand drum, a singing bowl, or a pair of tapping sticks into someone’s hands, something ancient and joyful wakes up inside them. Rhythm is in all of us – it always has been.
My sessions are designed to be completely accessible. I welcome residents at every level of engagement. We move at the group’s pace. Some participants dive in enthusiastically from the very first beat. Others take a few minutes to warm up. I meet each person exactly where they are, and I celebrate every single moment of participation.
What a Session at Your Facility Looks Like
My interactive drumming program for assisted living and senior communities is designed from the ground up for older adults. When I arrive at your facility, I bring everything with me – hand drums, singing bowls, bells, shakers, tapping sticks, a didgeridoo, and more. There’s nothing for your staff to set up. No complicated coordination. I take care of it all so your team can simply be present and enjoy the experience alongside your residents.
Here’s what a typical session includes:
-
A friendly, warm welcome that immediately puts everyone at ease
-
Gentle, guided rhythm activities that build naturally in energy and engagement
-
Instruments suited to every comfort level and range of mobility
-
Plenty of laughter, lighthearted moments, and genuine connection
-
A group performance finale where everyone plays together as one joyful ensemble
Sessions are completely customizable to fit your community’s size, schedule, and the specific needs of your residents. Whether it’s an intimate memory care group or a larger community-wide event, I design every experience around the people in the room.
The Difference That Rhythm Makes
The rhythm-based experiences I create are inspired by music therapy principles and intentionally designed to support connection and wellbeing. I’ve seen it with my own eyes in sessions across Wisconsin – and the research backs it up too. You can read more about how interactive drumming specifically benefits seniors and the science behind what makes it so powerful.
Over and over, I hear from activity directors, staff members, and family members about what they notice in the days following a session:
-
Residents who are typically withdrawn become animated, engaged, and eager to participate
-
Laughter and conversation flow more freely during and after the session
-
A palpable lift in the energy and spirit of the room that carries through the rest of the day
-
Residents asking – sometimes quite enthusiastically – when I’m coming back
This matters deeply. For residents who may feel isolated or disconnected from the larger world, a drumming session is a vibrant, joyful reminder that they are seen, celebrated, and fully capable of creating something beautiful.
Proud to Serve Wisconsin Communities
I’m based in the Madison and Sun Prairie, Wisconsin area, and I travel directly to your facility – your residents don’t need to go anywhere. I’ve had the honor of bringing these experiences to communities throughout the region, and every single visit reminds me why this work is so meaningful.
If you’re an activity director, program coordinator, family member, or facility administrator looking for enriching programming that goes beyond the ordinary, I would love to connect.
